US law enforcement tightens security for Xi summit as welcome and protest events planned

As Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Washington begins, US law enforcement agencies are ramping up security measures. The US Secret Service, leading the security efforts, emphasized its commitment to safeguarding foreign heads of state on US soil. They have been coordinating with Chinese officials and local law enforcement for weeks.

Washington's Metropolitan Police Department reported that five groups have filed for rallies, including the Falun Dafa Association of Washington, DC, the Tibetan Youth Congress, and the Greater Washington Chinese-American Community, which recently hosted a Chinese cultural festival. Chinese diaspora groups in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas are also organizing welcoming events, with demonstrations planned outside the Chinese embassy and a candlelight vigil.

The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed its collaboration with local, state, and federal partners, though specific details on operations and staffing were not disclosed. The National Park Service noted that demonstrations on federal land typically require permits for gatherings over 25 people. While the Secret Service respects the public's right to demonstrate, they warned that law enforcement would respond to any unlawful activity.

Residents and commuters were advised to expect enhanced security measures, especially downtown, with the visit scheduled from September 23 to 25.
