UN chief urges US-China dialogue on AI, calls for multipolar system

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the United States and China to engage in discussions about artificial intelligence, expressing concern over the rapid pace of technological advancements. Speaking at the UN General Assembly's 81st session, Guterres warned that unchecked development of AI could lead to unforeseen consequences.

He emphasized the importance of a multilateral system with the United Nations at its core to address global challenges. Guterres stressed that technology, including AI, is advancing at an unprecedented rate, and that the real danger lies in the lack of oversight and oversight mechanisms. He called for responsible safeguards in AI development and urged a dialogue between the two nations to ensure equitable representation in the international system.

Guterres advocated for a multipolar world with strong, balanced institutions centered on the UN, reflecting contemporary realities and the shifting power dynamics of countries and economies. He also highlighted the urgent need to address climate change, asserting that those responsible for environmental degradation must bear the costs.

The Secretary-General reiterated that peace, stability, and security cannot be guaranteed by military, economic, or technological superiority alone.
