UK to provide Saudi Arabia with aerial refueling capabilities for limited period

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has agreed to provide military assistance to Saudi Arabia in response to attacks by Iran-backed Houthis, media reports claimed on Monday. The British planes will offer defensive air-to-air refueling support to Saudi jets, Burnham informed reporters while traveling to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The UK's involvement will be limited to aiding Saudi aircraft in defending the nation from drone and missile attacks rather than striking the Houthis directly, according to the PA news agency. The utilization of the Voyager tanker is anticipated to commence within days, and the mission is expected to be of limited duration, potentially lasting "weeks".

This additional refueling mission complements the UK's already deployed Sky Sabre air defense system in Saudi Arabia. Burnham stated that he was taking action to protect Britain's interests and the broader region as Saudi Arabia faced attacks, potential further disruption, and needed to maintain open pathways. A Houthi assault on Riyadh occurred on Saturday, marking the first such attack on the Saudi capital in years, marking a significant escalation.

In the past month, the Houthis, who had controlled most of Yemen's populated regions, launched a swift offensive to seize the entire Red Sea coast, thereby gaining command over the crucial Bab al-Mandab strait. Saudi Arabia, since 2015, has led a coalition supporting the internationally recognized government, intensifying the conflict and triggering one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises in the impoverished nation.
