Uhuru hits back at Ruto over continued blame

Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta rebuked President William Ruto over persistent criticism of his administration, questioning why his name was still being mentioned four years after he transferred power. During a Jubilee Party leadership handover, Uhuru stated he voluntarily ceded power following the 2022 elections and expected the new team to focus on governance rather than dwelling on the past.

He questioned whether the continued blame served a purpose or if it was merely an excuse when things were not going well. Uhuru alleged that political leaders often resorted to blaming their predecessors when faced with challenges. His comments followed Ruto's renewed accusations against Kenyatta, calling him a "rebel leader" and urging him to distance himself from active political mobilization.

Ruto also accused Uhuru of involvement in opposition politics ahead of the 2027 General Election. Uhuru reminded Ruto and his supporters that his administration accepted the 2022 election results and peacefully transferred power without violence. He noted that there was no need for political discourse to remain focused on his presidency years after he left office.

Uhuru defended his right to remain politically active, emphasizing that he remained a member of the Jubilee Party and would continue addressing issues affecting Kenyans. He expressed no interest in engaging in verbal sparring with Ruto or his allies, urging his supporters to concentrate on organizing the Jubilee Party and collaborating with other Kenyans.

He called upon the youth to avoid being exploited in political conflicts. After stepping down from the formal Jubilee leadership, Uhuru endorsed Fred Matiang'i as his successor, subject to the party's National Delegates Conference, and described Matiang'i as a wise, hardworking leader with no ill will.
