UAE to focus on conflict resolution, water and AI at UNGA, ambassador says

The UAE is set to focus on several key priorities during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab told The National before the event that his delegation will prioritize conflict resolution through dialogue and adherence to international law, as well as cooperation on UN reform, artificial intelligence, climate action, and sustainable water solutions.

Despite regional tensions, Abushahab expressed the UAE's commitment to working towards stability and peace. He acknowledged the UN Security Council's paralysis but emphasized the value of high-level diplomacy to reduce tension and find common ground for resolution.

The UAE is particularly concerned about the security of international supply chains, energy, and trade, given the disruptions to the global economy due to the Iran war. Abushahab highlighted the importance of respecting freedom of navigation and the rules-based international order, as well as ensuring the free flow of goods to maintain peace and security.

The Security Council has tools at its disposal, including an arms embargo across Sudan, which Abushahab called for to pressure the warring parties to pursue a political process leading to a civilian-led government.

In addition to regional conflicts, the UAE will use the UNGA to build momentum for the 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi. Ambassador Abushahab emphasized the importance of water security, noting that there are serious challenges and solutions that require innovation, finance, and international cooperation. The UAE plans to encourage countries to increase their ambitions and develop initiatives through meetings in New York, including the release of a report on the water demand of artificial intelligence.

The conference will also highlight new AI solutions across the water sector and innovations that can reduce AI's demand for water resources.
