President Trump has long expressed his desire for Greenland to become a part of the United States, and even threatened to seize the semi-autonomous territory from Denmark, a NATO ally. The U.S. has a history of presence in Greenland, and officials from the U.S., Greenland, and Denmark engaged in months of negotiations to find solutions to address Trump's security concerns about the mineral-rich island.

This agreement has strained relations within NATO, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warning that a U.S. takeover would be equivalent to the end of NATO.
