Trump rejects international AI regulation, calls it 'globalist scheme'

United States President Donald Trump dismissed calls for global regulation of artificial intelligence during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly. He referred to the idea as a "globalist scheme" aimed at controlling the new technology. Instead, Trump proposed using the term "super intelligence" in government communications, claiming it was more accurate and widely appealing.

He dismissed warnings from AI safety advocates, likening them to previous doomsday predictions about climate change. Trump stated that every major technological advancement brings challenges, and super intelligence would be no different. He warned that the same individuals who predicted global warming would lead to the end of humanity were now predicting that AI would do the same.

Ahead of a week of meetings and speeches in New York, leaders from over 20 countries urged binding safety measures for advanced AI, warning that its development could outpace control measures. China and the United States, both major AI powers, were not signatories to these calls for regulation. Trump reiterated that the United States strongly rejects the notion of any globalist scheme to control AI.

Meanwhile, UN chief Antonio Guterres called for the US and China to initiate a dialogue on AI's future, similar to the US-Soviet engagement during the Cold War. Guterres emphasized that countries with the greatest AI capabilities bear the greatest responsibilities to humanity to establish channels for dialogue, transparency, trust, and cooperation.
