Trump, Greenland, Denmark sign deal in bid to end Arctic standoff

US President Donald Trump, along with Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, signed a security deal in New York on Tuesday. The agreement allows for a larger US military presence on Greenland, potentially resolving tensions over the strategically located island. The deal, signed during Trump's visit to the UN General Assembly, does not grant the US full territorial control over Greenland, but it does permit a more significant military presence on the island. This move is seen as crucial for American national security and defense in the Arctic region.

The agreement amends a 1951 defense treaty that has governed US presence in Greenland, marking the first major expansion of US military infrastructure on the island since the Cold War. The deal includes the establishment of a "Golden Dome" defense system in Greenland, which aims to shield against ballistic missile threats. Two new military sites are expected to be developed: Narsarsuaq, a former Cold War airbase, and Mestersvig, currently used by the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.

Trump emphasized the agreement's importance for US security, stating that no adversary will be allowed to establish a military presence in Greenland or make sensitive investments without the US's approval. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen highlighted the agreement's role in strengthening NATO and respecting Greenland's right to self-determination.

Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, is situated between the Arctic and North America and holds significant energy resources. The US already operates a military base at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland.
