Tinubu’s absence from UNGA not an issue — Anyim

Former Senate President Pius Anyim has affirmed that President Bola Tinubu's absence from the current United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York should not be a cause for concern. Anyim, who was also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, made this assertion during an appearance on ARISE NEWS' Prime Time on Monday.

Tinubu, who initially planned to return to Nigeria after a brief working vacation, has extended his stay abroad for private matters and other engagements before his return. Vice President Kashim Shettima is presently representing Nigeria at the 80th session of the UNGA in the United States.

Anyim argued that the absence of the President from the UNGA is not unusual, emphasizing that the Vice President has the constitutional authority to represent the country at such international gatherings. He further stated that Nigerians are aware that the President is currently on a short vacation and that his delegation was handled by the Vice President.

Regarding the significance of the President's absence, Anyim clarified that the annual UN event consists of the General Assembly and various bilateral and multilateral meetings held outside the main assembly. He explained that the President's personal attendance is only crucial if there are scheduled engagements requiring his presence. In such cases, the Vice President can also represent the country, as well as the Foreign Minister.

Anyim also dismissed concerns that Tinubu's absence might prevent him from meeting U.S. President Donald Trump, asserting that high-level engagements are typically scheduled in advance. He added that many world leaders have chosen not to attend the UNGA in person.
