Tinubu’s absence from UNGA not an issue — Anyim

Former Senate President Pius Anyim has declared that President Bola Tinubu's absence from the current United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York should not be a concern. He further explained that President Tinubu delegated the task to Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is currently representing Nigeria at the event. Anyim, who previously served as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, made these remarks during an appearance on ARISE NEWS' Prime Time.

Tinubu had initially planned to return to Nigeria after a short working vacation, but he decided to extend his stay abroad. According to the Presidency, he would utilize this time for private visits and other engagements before returning to the country. Meanwhile, Shettima is serving as the Vice President's representative at the 80th session of the UNGA in the United States.

Anyim argued that there is nothing unusual about Tinubu's absence, pointing out that the Vice President has the constitutional authority to represent the country at the gathering. He further stated that the President's absence should not be an issue, noting that Nigerians are well aware that Tinubu is on a short leave and vacation. Anyim reiterated that the Vice President can also represent the country, alongside the Foreign Minister.

He further clarified that UNGA comprises two parts: the General Assembly and various bilateral and multilateral engagements held on the sidelines. Anyim suggested that the President's absence would only become significant if there were scheduled engagements that required his personal attendance. He also dismissed concerns that Tinubu's absence might prevent him from meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that high-level engagements are typically scheduled in advance.

Anyim added that it is not uncommon for many world leaders to choose not to attend UNGA in person. He concluded by emphasizing that this is not a cause for concern, as there are numerous heads of state who do not attend the event.
