This teacher has taken SPM 25 times – and he’s not done yet

Zulkifli Pungut, a 58-year-old mathematics teacher and principal of SMK Simpang Renggam in Johor, has been taking the SPM exams for 25 years and is preparing for his 26th attempt this year. Instead of focusing solely on preparing his students, Zulkifli sits the examination himself to understand the pressure, fatigue, and uncertainty his students experience.

This unique approach has transformed his teaching style, emphasizing time management, pressure handling, and emotional regulation skills. Zulkifli dedicates two to three hours daily to review and practice questions using official education ministry modules and trial papers, also seeking feedback from fellow mathematics teachers.

This year, he aims for an A+ in Mathematics, viewing the goal as a benchmark for personal improvement and a source of encouragement for his students. Over the years, Zulkifli has observed significant changes in the examination, including a stronger emphasis on higher-order thinking skills, such as analyzing information and applying concepts, rather than mere memorization or routine calculations.

He advises students to break down challenging questions into smaller parts, practice consistently, strengthen fundamentals, and seek help when needed, emphasizing that mathematics is more about mental training than just speed. Repeatedly sitting for SPM has given Zulkifli an unparalleled perspective, akin to sitting on the other side of the exam paper.
