Tech Giants Back Andreessen Horowitz’s Alternative Tech Academy

Tech giants, including Anduril, Anthropic, Coinbase, Google, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, Palantir, Replit, and Stripe, have joined forces to support Andreessen Horowitz's alternative tech academy. The venture capital firm has committed $35 million to the two-year, unaccredited school, which aims to keep young entrepreneurs in school rather than launching companies prematurely. Based in San Francisco, the academy caters to students aged 16 to 22.

The founders of the academy, overseen by Gagan Biyani (co-founder of Udemy), will provide students with access to software and compute resources, as well as office spaces for lessons. The goal is to prepare students for top tech companies or help them launch their own tech ventures. Biyani emphasized the importance of hands-on learning, stating that the ability to build and ship things is more crucial than ever in the modern world.

The curriculum includes project-based learning, such as developing AI models, creating products, and interviewing industry experts. Students are also offered internship opportunities, known as "co-ops," with the founding partners. However, some experts have expressed skepticism about the new model. John Friedman, dean of the Watson School of International and Public Affairs at Brown University, believes that while having industry leaders speak to students is valuable, traditional schools with experienced teachers and diverse student interactions offer unique advantages.
