Teacher unions give government September 24 deadline to resolve promotion arrears

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Graduate Teachers’ Association (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) have given the government until midday on September 24, 2026 to address outstanding issues related to promotion salaries and arrears owed to teachers. In a notice sent on September 22, the unions expressed concern that the 2025 promotion placement and payment of arrears had not been fully implemented.

They argued this breach of an earlier agreement, which mandated the automatic placement of affected teachers by the end of September 2026, had caused significant frustration among teachers nationwide. The unions also highlighted that unresolved issues included the renewal of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the payment of the Deprived Area Allowance.

Should these matters not be resolved by midday on September 24, they warned teachers would have no choice but to take action. The unions emphasized the need for the government to take full responsibility for the situation. They urged teachers to remain calm and adhere to official directives from their leadership, while also encouraging participation in any actions announced by the unions.
