Tadami River offers glimpses of mist and mystery as it winds through Fukushima Pref.

The Tadami River, situated in Japan's Oku-Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, is renowned for its enchanting mist that graces its waters from June to September. This misty spectacle is a rare sight, only visible during specific conditions.

Takahiro Watanabe, a local resident and boatman at 37, explained that the river's water temperature remains a consistent 10 to 15 degrees Celsius year-round, primarily due to snowmelt. The mist primarily materializes when the air temperature is at least 10 degrees warmer than the river's temperature. Humidity plays an equally crucial role, with the best chances of witnessing the mist occurring during early mornings, evenings, or shortly before, after, or during rain.

Upon arriving in Oku-Aizu in mid-July, the writer found that the first location, Kirigenkyo, already shrouded in a thin mist layer. As he commenced his photography, a sudden downpour transformed the area into a dense fog. The slow-moving ferry, crossing the river's surface, seemed to glide across a sea of clouds. The nearby sounds of streams flowing into the river echoed, providing a serene contrast to the ethereal ambiance.

The locals, although expressing inconvenience, were content with the quality of their air and water. The tradition of using hand-rowed boats for crossing the river dates back to the Mifuke settlement, which was relocated following a landslide in 1964. However, residents revived the custom in 2010 as the Kirigenkyo ferry service, with some of the current boatmen, like Watanabe, inheriting this tradition.

The astonishing beauty of the Tadami River's mist lies in its transient nature. The appearance of the mist varies throughout the day, influenced by factors such as the flow and intensity of the mist, as well as the angle of sunlight. Despite this unpredictability, the mist's fleeting presence adds an element of excitement and allure to the river, a reminder of nature's whimsical unpredictability.
