Suvendu Adhikari vows tourism boost in Cooch Behar, 20 per cent bonus for tea garden workers

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari vowed to enhance tourism in Cooch Behar district during his address on Tuesday. The government aims to upgrade infrastructure, including roads, railways, and air connectivity, to attract more visitors to the region known for its natural beauty and temples. An agreement with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu is expected on October 8 for the 'Udan' project, which will include the currently non-operational Cooch Behar airport.

Plans also involve improving guesthouses and accommodation facilities, which will boost hotels, transport, restaurants, local services, and small businesses linked to tourism. Adhikari assured to reopen closed tea gardens, fulfill promises, and provide ownership of surplus land to tea workers. The Terai-Dooars area will be designated as a world tourism hub within a year.

Adhikari toured the 19th-century Madanmohan Temple, highlighting the district's attraction for tourists. He pledged to build 1,200 houses in Toto Para and improve accommodation facilities for visitors. Adhikari emphasized a zero-tolerance approach towards crimes against women and children, warning of strict action against offenders.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated a Rhino gallery at Subhasini tea garden, pledged to save wildlife, and mentioned plans to relocate a Royal Bengal Tiger to Buxa Tiger Reserve. Additionally, Adhikari inaugurated a bridge over the Murti river in Jalpaiguri, costing nearly Rs 20 crore, and planned for two more bridges.
