Suspect in Belleville, Ont., shooting is dead, SIU says

On Yom Kippur, the most sacred day for the Jewish community, a 29-year-old man named Sean Ward from Quinte West, Ontario, opened fire on a police officer standing outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ontario. The man, identified by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), was shot during an exchange of gunfire with Const. Jeff Smith, a 13-year veteran of the Belleville police force.

Ward tragically succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Monday night, while Const. Smith sustained severe injuries and was initially placed in the ICU. However, his condition later improved and he remains in stable health. The shooting, which resulted in a post-mortem examination scheduled for Wednesday, left a mark of panic and distress in the community.

Estimates suggest that between 25 and 30 shots were fired, causing damage to police and civilian vehicles, nearby homes, and the synagogue itself. While neither local police nor the SIU have officially confirmed the motive behind the attack, the SIU spokesperson, Kristy Denette, implied it was a hate crime due to the timing and context.

In response to the horrifying incident, Belleville police Deputy Chief Sheri Meeks vowed to intensify police patrols and presence around the city, particularly at places of worship, to ensure community safety.
