Spain's Sanchez pledges continued support for Lebanon after Unifil withdrawal

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pledged to maintain Spain's backing for Lebanon following the withdrawal of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) on Tuesday. The meeting between Sanchez and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam took place in New York City, outside of the United Nations General Assembly session.

In a statement on X, Sanchez expressed Spain's ongoing commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. He emphasized that the cease-fire must be strictly adhered to and that dialogue is essential for achieving lasting peace in the region. The Spanish leader reiterated that Spain will continue to collaborate with European partners to bolster the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces in the wake of Unifil's mission ending at the close of the year.
