ShinyHunters hackers say they breached Federal Bureau of Investigation, no immediate comment from FBI

ShinyHunters, a digital extortion group, claims to have breached the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and stolen data on thousands of its employees. FBI spokespersons have not yet responded to Reuters' inquiries about the allegations. In a statement posted on their dark-web site and during an online chat with Reuters, the hackers mentioned their motivation behind the attack, stating that it was in response to a May 2026 FBI announcement detailing their techniques and advising targets not to pay any ransoms.

The hackers shared a screenshot of a vandalized FBI job site and purportedly demonstrated a sample of their stolen data. While Reuters could not confirm the authenticity of the screenshot, the news agency partially verified the authenticity of some of the allegedly stolen FBI personnel information by cross-referencing names and postal address details with credit bureau records and previously breached data preserved by dark-web intelligence firm District 4 Labs.

The verification process found matches in at least nine cases. However, Reuters could not determine the exact origin of the data or whether it was indeed stolen from the FBI's internal systems, as claimed by the hackers.
