ShinyHunters hackers say they breached FBI

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials have yet to respond to inquiries regarding a claim made by digital extortion group ShinyHunters. The group asserts that it has successfully infiltrated the FBI and stolen data on thousands of FBI personnel. ShinyHunters announced this breach on its dark-web site and during an online discussion with Reuters, attributing the attack to a May 2026 FBI announcement detailing the group's tactics and urging targets not to pay ransoms.

The hackers provided a screenshot of a defaced FBI job site and a sample of their allegedly obtained data, though Reuters could not confirm the authenticity of the screenshot. The FBI's job site and the Special Agent Applicant Portal were inaccessible as of Tuesday, corroborated by Reuters. To validate the purportedly stolen FBI personnel information, Reuters cross-referenced the names and addresses against credit bureau records and data from District 4 Labs, identifying matches in nine instances.

However, the agency couldn't determine the origin of the data or confirm if it was indeed stolen from the FBI's internal systems, as claimed by the hackers.
