ShinyHunters hackers say they breached FBI

On September 22, the digital extortion group ShinyHunters claimed it had infiltrated the Federal Bureau of Investigation, alleging the theft of data pertaining to thousands of FBI employees. The bureau has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the incident on Tuesday. According to a statement from ShinyHunters, the group targeted the FBI in reaction to an announcement made in May 2026, where the agency outlined ShinyHunters' tactics and cautioned targets against making payments.

The hackers shared a screenshot purportedly showing a defaced FBI job site, along with what they claimed was a sample of the stolen data. However, Reuters has been unable to verify the authenticity of this screenshot. Despite this, Reuters was able to validate the legitimacy of some of the allegedly stolen FBI personnel details by cross-referencing them with credit bureau records and previously breached data preserved by the dark-web intelligence firm District 4 Labs.

In nearly nine instances, Reuters found a correspondence between the claimed data and verified records. Nonetheless, the agency has not been able to ascertain the origin of the data or confirm if it was indeed extracted from the FBI's internal systems as the hackers asserted.
