Second man charged months after deadly mass shooting

A second alleged gunman has been charged with murder in connection with a deadly mass shooting that occurred in May 2022 at a home in Canley Heights, southwest Sydney. Five men were present inside the residence when they were ambushed by two individuals who commenced firing. Upon receiving multiple 911 calls and observing several of the men seeking medical attention at nearby hospitals, police responded to the scene.

A 28-year-old and a 32-year-old arrived at Liverpool Hospital approximately 8:30 pm with gunshot wounds. The younger man succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter, while the 32-year-old required treatment for a neck wound. Roughly 10 minutes later, two additional men - aged 23 and 22 - presented to Fairfield Hospital, both in critical condition.

The 23-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to the neck, while his counterpart faced a shoulder injury. The fifth assailant, aged 19, arrived at Liverpool Hospital an hour later with superficial injuries to his arm.

A 23-year-old man was subsequently charged with murder and remains in custody awaiting court proceedings. Another individual, aged 37, was apprehended in Silverwater on Tuesday morning and has been charged with murder, possession or use of a prohibited weapon without a permit, and involvement in a criminal group contributing to criminal activity. The 37-year-old was remanded in custody to face trial later that same day.

Detectives have indicated that they are investigating potential links between the victim and a Sydney crime gang. Local police commander Craig Middleton revealed that Taskforce Falcon, established almost a year prior to address gangland violence, was involved in the investigation alongside the homicide squad. Middleton emphasized that the incident was a brazen and violent attack on five people inside their home.
