Ruto, Rubio hold talks on trade, AI and regional security

President William Ruto met with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The talks centered around trade, technology, energy, and regional security. Ruto expressed support for extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), stating it would bolster trade between Africa and the United States and create more economic opportunities.

Kenya and the US share a "strong and enduring partnership anchored in trade, security, technology and development," said Ruto on social media platform X.

The US has extended AGOA until December 31, 2028. Kenya and the US are also expanding their cooperation in artificial intelligence, specifically in health, education, and financial services. The leaders discussed responsible governance of rapidly advancing AI technologies and potential areas for cooperation, including critical minerals and nuclear energy. The talks also addressed the sustainability of the security mission in Somalia and efforts to promote stability in Haiti and Sudan.

Ruto revealed that the US and Kenya are exploring methods to achieve a ceasefire, political settlement, and ongoing regional engagement in Sudan.
