Rothschild aiding bid to take Formula 1 to South Africa

Rothschild Investment Bank is collaborating with a group in a £300 million bid to bring Formula 1 back to South Africa after a 28-year hiatus. This comes as interest in expanding Formula 1's presence on the African continent continues to rise, with previous proposals originating from Johannesburg and Rwanda. Neal Froneman, a prominent South African mining tycoon and former CEO of Sibanye Stillwater, is leading the Cape Town-based consortium, with support from other key figures including Rothschild, law firm Webber Wentzel's Robert Appelbaum, and fellow mining magnate Srinivasan Venkatakrishnan.

Despite the involvement of government entities in both the Cape Town and Johannesburg bids, Formula 1 has not yet engaged in discussions with South African parties regarding a return to the country. South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie suggested that the absence of Formula 1, Olympics, and major soccer tournaments in Africa can be attributed to historical challenges faced by the continent.

Moreover, Africa possesses a significant number of potential Formula 1 venues, such as Monza, Imola, and Monaco, all close in proximity, lending credibility to the idea of bringing the sport to the continent.

Rwanda has also expressed interest in staging a Formula 1 race, with its president, Paul Kagame, endorsing the construction of a new track near Kigali at the Bugesera International Airport. Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem have acknowledged the Rwanda proposal as a serious contender.
