Ressourcen: USA unterzeichnen Vereinbarung mit Dänemark im Grönland-Streit

The United States has entered into a new defense agreement with Denmark and Greenland, paving the way for the construction of additional military bases on the Arctic island. According to the Danish government, the indefinite accord allows for the establishment of bases in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. Moreover, the US is expected to modernize and expand its activities at the Pituffik Space Base.

The deployment of the US missile defense system "Golden Dome" on Greenland will also be permitted in the future. The aim is to enhance NATO's engagement in the Arctic region, with US aircraft authorized to fly over and land on the entire Greenland territory, including territorial waters. The rights and lifestyle of the Greenlandic society must be respected during such activities.

The agreement was signed alongside the UN General Assembly in New York, following months of disputes surrounding the issue. US President Donald Trump had repeatedly claimed that resource-rich Greenland should become part of the US for national security reasons, even considering purchasing it. He also did not rule out a military intervention.

The deal allows for a stronger US military presence in Greenland, even though it does not fulfill Trump's demand. However, it does mark a reaction to the growing presence of Russia and China in the Arctic. Several details of the agreement remained unknown until recently, highlighting the far-reaching security policies for the island's future.

In the event of Greenland declaring independence from Denmark, the new state must either remain a NATO member or submit a corresponding application, and the defense agreement must continue to be adhered to. States not belonging to the Western military alliance are prohibited from establishing their own military installations on Greenland.

The treaty also excludes non-NATO and non-European Union investors from sensitive economic sectors. Furthermore, it extends cooperation on electronic espionage in Greenland. The agreement still needs to be approved by the parliaments of Denmark and Greenland.
