Princess Diana's brother, eyewitness to history, sparks royal ruckus

LONDON — Charles Spencer, brother of the late Princess Diana, is no stranger to penning books on British monarchs. His previous bestsellers, "Killers of the King" and "To Catch a King," delved into events from the 17th century; however, his upcoming publication, "Swan Song: Diana, My Sister," appears to follow a similar vein. This new book offers a perspective on his sister's life and her tumultuous marriage to the current King Charles.

In advance reviews, Spencer asserts that Charles was "giddily elated" following Diana's 1997 demise, reigniting a painful chapter for the royal family.

At 62 years old, Spencer penned the book, claiming it was his duty as an eyewitness to history. Nevertheless, Buckingham Palace has rejected his version of events in decidedly strong language. The palace's statement, which has fueled additional publicity surrounding the book, asserts that "the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment, and color memory." Spencer, a godson to Queen Elizabeth, was born into a prominent British aristocratic family with strong ties to the royal lineage.
