Premier: Master languages that unlock global knowledge, opportunities while preserving identity

Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasized the importance of mastering languages for both global knowledge and personal identity during the closing ceremony of the 2026 National Student Forum Competition at Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 in Kuching, Sarawak. He highlighted that Bahasa Malaysia served as the national language and a unifying bridge for Malaysia's diverse communities, while English proficiency facilitated access to global knowledge and opportunities.

Abang Johari underscored that language mastery and cultural identity need not be mutually exclusive, citing Japan as an example of a nation that thrived in technology and science while preserving its native language. He urged Sarawak's youth to embrace their linguistic diversity as a strength, particularly in Chinese independent secondary schools, through competitions like the forum.

These events fostered skills beyond competition, such as argument construction, issue evaluation, and confident expression of opinions. Abang Johari stressed that leadership abilities were cultivated through courage, articulation of views, and accountability for decisions, not just titles. He encouraged participants to recognize their potential for future roles as community leaders, corporate executives, academics, or national leaders.

Drawing on a Malay proverb, he assured that exceptional talent and character could flourish regardless of geographical placement, emphasizing that knowledge, discipline, and good values would enable young people to succeed wherever their paths led.
