Police seek information on Delta APC-NDC clash, clarify rifle recovery

The Delta State Police Command has issued a call for information to help with their investigation into a clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State. The command addressed misconceptions about the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during the incident, stating that the weapon was discovered during a search of an old building near where a man was rescued from a mob and not handed over to the police by anyone.

The command's Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, announced this in a statement on Tuesday following rumors on social media about the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during a political rally in Uvwie. The command had received intelligence on September 15 about a planned rally and the potential for a clash between APC and NDC supporters.

Police were deployed to the rally venue the following day, September 18, but the tensions were managed. At around 11:30 am, police patrol teams noticed an irate group of youths surrounding Collins Egbara near an old building in Effurun town. Egbara was rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment. A quick search of the building led to the discovery of the AK-47 rifle.

Collins is currently recovering and is in stable condition. The police deny reports that the rifle was handed over by anyone and said the investigation is ongoing. The Commissioner of Police urged political parties and their supporters to notify the police ahead of rallies to ensure adequate security.
