Pockets of excellence exist despite defence budget cuts

Despite recent Defence budget cuts, pockets of excellence continue to thrive at Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD), Africa’s premier defence manufacturing showcase. Held at Waterkloof Air Force Base, the event concluded with an impressive airshow featuring the South African Air Force’s (SAAF) Gripen fighters, Rooivalks, and Hawks from the SA’s Top Gun school.

The sight of these sleek aircraft soaring overhead and executing flawless maneuvers was a far cry from the previous AAD in 2024, when the SAAF’s fighter component was grounded due to budgetary constraints.

Critics argue that the event in 2024 may have been more of a spectacle than a genuine display of capability, with cynics suggesting that the SAAF’s fighter component was grounded to appease the demands of other defense budgets. However, the event showcased significant ingenuity and capability within South African defence manufacturing.

Homegrown manufacturers have designed armoured combat vehicles and supplied militaries across Africa and beyond, while the country’s renowned "boer maak ‘n plan" spirit continues to rejuvenate existing military equipment.

From advanced drones, tents, and communication kits to the classic South African ability to upgrade what the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) already possesses – such as optics for turrets and the beloved R4 assault rifle – the 2023 AAD demonstrated that exceptional talent exists within the country. The successful demonstration of high-tech fighters performing synchronized aerobatics and mock battles using pyrotechnics and helicopters is a testament to the planning, practice, and professionalism that the Cassandras claim is lacking.

It is essential to believe what we see at events like the AAD, rather than solely relying on the negative narratives that often overshadow the achievements of our nation’s defense industry.
