‘Partnership with Qatar key to tackling global humanitarian crises’

In Doha, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative to Qatar, H.E. Ahmed Lotfy Mohsen, emphasized that the strategic partnership with Qatar plays a crucial role in tackling global humanitarian crises. Speaking to QNA, Mohsen highlighted that Qatar, through its government bodies and charitable institutions, has provided $440 million in financial contributions since 2010 to support UNHCR's protection programs and life-saving assistance for forcibly displaced persons across the globe.

Mohsen elaborated on the scope of Qatar's support, which extends beyond monetary aid to encompass logistical and material assistance. This includes the facilitation of the transport of urgent relief supplies to crisis zones like Afghanistan and Lebanon, as well as a prominent diplomatic role in maintaining stability and fostering dialogue for implementing voluntary return and local integration programs.

The UNHCR representative noted a specific impact of the financial aid, mentioning that a $40 million contribution from the Qatar Fund for Development since 2019, in the form of flexible unearmarked funds, has empowered UNHCR to respond swiftly to emergencies and allocate resources to the most underfunded operations. This financial flexibility ensures the continuity of vital services such as healthcare, education, and shelter.

Regarding innovative financing tools and Islamic philanthropy, Mohsen revealed that total Qatari contributions, including Zakat and voluntary charity, have reached nearly $145 million since 2018. This includes a strategic agreement signed by Qatar Charity in June 2020 to contribute $10 million to the Global Islamic Fund for Refugees (GIFR).
