Osaka comedy club shows visitors Japan beyond guidebooks

Located beneath L&L Bar&Restaurant in Osaka's Minami district, the Osaka Comedy Club presents a humorous perspective on Japan, often overshadowed in travel guides. This independently operated venue, run from a basement theater, hosts stand-up shows in English almost daily, with weekend performances regularly selling out the 20-seat space.

The club's appeal draws foreign visitors, who seek English-language entertainment scarce in Japan, and provides a space for travelers to meet one another. Edd, a British comedian who founded the club's predecessor, incorporates observations about Japan into his routines, offering a humorous take on local customs and cultural differences.

For instance, he turned Japan's restrictions on tattooed customers at some hot springs into a joke, suggesting he might get a tattoo of a Band-Aid to address the issue. Edd first performed in London and later in China and other locations before moving to Japan, where he believes foreign visitors are drawn to the venue due to the scarcity of English-language entertainment.

The club also offers a different route for aspiring comedians, who initially perform at open-mic nights and must prove themselves before appearing in regular shows. Gaku Hiroshima, a former web writer who discovered stand-up while looking for opportunities to write in English, performs almost daily at the club. He draws heavily on his personal experiences, including his upbringing and life as a gay Asian man, and has performed at open-mic events in Tokyo before joining the Osaka club in February 2023.

Hiroshima aims to hold his own solo show at the club and aspires to prestigious awards, including the Nobel Prize in Literature.
