Only state police bill transmitted to 36 states, N’Assembly clarifies

The National Assembly has clarified that only the State Police Services Bill has been transmitted to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration, refuting reports suggesting all constitutional amendment bills had been forwarded. This clarification emerged after public confusion over which bills had been sent to the states.

On September 16, 2026, the National Assembly announced the transmission of the State Police Bill, a proposed constitutional amendment aiming to establish state police services. The National Assembly's Clerk, Kamoru Ogunlana, emphasized in a statement that this was the sole constitutional amendment proposal so far sent to the states, correcting the notion that all such bills had been transmitted.

He explained the prioritization was driven by public demands for improved security and policing nationwide. Subsequent constitutional amendment bills will be forwarded to the states after passing through both chambers of the National Assembly, in line with the constitutional amendment process.
