‘No love marriages’: Haryana village moves against couples after 3 weddings

Residents of Aryanagar village in Haryana’s Hisar district have taken steps to discourage love marriages following three to four recent weddings against family wishes. During a Sunday village meeting, around 1,000 people discussed measures to prevent such marriages and preserve the community’s social fabric. Shockingly, one newlywed bride reportedly walked out just 20 minutes after the ceremony.

Residents warned that couples who marry for love would not be allowed to reside in the village, and discussions included imposing social boycotts on such couples and their family members. Hanuman Verma, a BJP leader and village resident, clarified that the decision was not a panchayat order but represented the collective opinion of residents.

He emphasized that every girl in the community was viewed as their daughter and that they wished to discourage marriages against family wishes. The village is expected to form a committee to examine the issue, while a door-to-door survey will determine community support for the move. However, the elected village panchayat has distanced itself from the decision. Aryanagar is also the hometown of Haryana PWD Minister Ranbir Gangwa's in-laws.
