NMDPRA Moves to Strengthen Fight Against Fuel Smuggling

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) convened a workshop with government security agencies to bolster their joint efforts in combating the smuggling and diversion of petroleum products. The primary objective of the workshop was to improve collaboration between regulatory, security, and enforcement agencies, as well as enhance the use of technology and data-driven surveillance to monitor petroleum product movements.

Ogbugo Ukoha, the NMDPRA Executive Director responsible for distribution systems, storage, and retailing infrastructure, emphasized that petroleum product diversion poses a significant threat to the integrity and efficiency of the downstream market. He noted that every liter diverted from its legitimate destination can distort demand and supply data, weaken investor confidence, and undermine the long-term sustainability of the petroleum industry.

Ukoha stressed the importance of complementing traditional physical enforcement measures with data-driven surveillance techniques and strengthening cooperation among relevant agencies. He explained that improving traceability and accountability of petroleum product movements would enable authorities to identify potential diversion risks earlier, thereby enhancing the resilience of the petroleum supply chain.
