Niger Miners’ deaths: Calling for NSCDC boss’ head unnecessary, hasty — Alancha

Activist and social activist, Comrade Dominic Alancha, has urged a comprehensive investigation into the passing of 37 suspected illicit miners held by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Alancha cautioned against premature demands for the ousting of NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi.

At least 37 detainees, comprising minors, succumbed to their injuries in NSCDC custody in Minna, following operations targeting illicit mining. The Federal Government has appointed an independent committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the fatalities while NSCDC has detained staff in connection with the incident. Alancha expressed condolences to the bereaved families, labeling the incident as "an ugly occurrence" that could have been averted.

He noted the investigation should clarify the events, including the arrest and detention of the victims. Alancha acknowledged Audi's steps thus far, including suspension of personnel, but pushed for continuous inquiry. He also addressed a claim of chemical spraying inside the detention facility, describing it as a grave allegation that warrants scrutiny.

Alancha urged NSCDC leadership to regularly brief Nigerians and the President on the investigation's progress. Regarding demands for Audi's dismissal, Alancha deemed such requests premature, stating that responsibility or negligence should first be established before any judgment about NSCDC leadership can be drawn. He emphasized that removing the NSCDC boss at this juncture would not address the underlying issues, urging the Corps to conclude the investigation and release its findings.
