Navi Mumbai May Face 10 Per Cent Water Cut After Diwali If Morbe Dam Fails To Reach Full Storage

Navi Mumbai residents may face a 10% reduction in water supply after Diwali if the Morbe dam fails to reach full storage, according to concerns raised by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). The city's demand for water is rising each year, and the current rainfall shortfall in the Morbe dam's catchment area has raised alarm.

Morbe Dam Provides 480 MLD The Morbe dam, Navi Mumbai's primary source of drinking water, has received 3,420.80 mm of rainfall this year, well below the 4,000 mm needed for the reservoir to overflow. Currently, the water level is at 86.19 metres, with the overflow mark at 88 metres. Insufficient Rainfall Raises Concern The civic administration is worried that the dam may not overflow this year, similar to previous years such as 2022 and 2020, when the dam levels were 87.62 metres and 86.94 metres respectively.

In contrast, the city's water demand has increased significantly, making the availability of water for the entire year a growing concern. Decision Pending The civic officials have not yet decided whether the 10% water cut will be necessary after Diwali, urging citizens to use water judiciously and conserve resources.
