Mumbai Shocker: 35-Year-Old Man Dies In RPF Custody At CSMT Station After Alleged Altercation; Maharashtra CID Takes Over Investigation

Mumbai: A 35-year-old man from Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, Imran Sheikh, tragically passed away while under the custody of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). According to reports, Imran had arrived in Mumbai two days prior, in pursuit of employment, and sought assistance from the RPF post at CSMT.

An altercation allegedly ensued, with Imran's family alleging that RPF personnel had assaulted him. However, Central Railway officials contended that Imran had initially attacked RPF personnel before resorting to force.

On September 20, 2026, around 10:18 am, an individual believed to be around 30 years old approached the RPF CSMT Main Post, appearing disoriented and claiming that certain individuals were attempting to kill him. He subsequently became aggressive, striking RPF Sub-Inspector Aniket as well as himself. After restraint to protect him from self-injury, GRP CSMT was informed, and five GRP personnel arrived at the RPF post. Imran was then placed in RPF custody in an injured state.

Subsequently, when Imran visited the toilet and did not return for approximately 10 minutes, RPF personnel reportedly forcibly opened the door to find him unconscious. He was rushed to St George Hospital, where, following a delayed response from medical staff, he was pronounced dead. The GRP registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR), and his body was transported to JJ Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Western Railway staff at Mumbai Central were observed taking part in a Swachhata Pledge ceremony. CCTV footage revealed that Imran had been wandering around the CSMT premises throughout the morning, visiting the GRP office and Help Desk without any identification card or mobile phone. Two general tickets, dated September 18 and September 19, 2026, were recovered from his possession.

Subsequent to the incident, his photograph has been forwarded to the Bhusaval Division and local police for identification purposes and to trace his movements.

The incident has prompted the GRP CSMT to initiate a UD (Unnatural Death) case, while ongoing CCTV scrutiny and a broader investigation are underway. The investigation is now being overseen by the Maharashtra CID, with CID Konkan Range SP Prashant Waghunde leading the probe. All CCTV footage from the station and RPF office has been secured for analysis.
