Mobilität: Anteil von E-Autos bei Neuzulassungen in EU erreicht Rekord

The share of electric vehicles in new registrations across the EU reached a record high in 2025, according to the Federal Statistical Office. Pure electric cars accounted for 17.3 percent of all new car registrations, meaning nearly one in every six new cars in the EU was an electric vehicle. Additionally, 42.4 percent of new cars were hybrid models, while 27.3 percent were pure gasoline and 9.8 percent were pure diesel.

Other fuel types played a minor role. The share of pure electric cars in annual new registrations in the EU has grown significantly over the past decade - it was only 0.4 percent in 2015. Denmark and the Netherlands led the way in terms of pure electric car percentage, with Denmark at 67.8 percent, followed by the Netherlands at 40.2 percent and Malta at 37.6 percent.

Croatia, Slovakia, and Bulgaria had the lowest percentages at 1.9 percent, 4.7 percent, and 4.9 percent respectively. The shift towards electric mobility in Germany has been driven by high gasoline prices, improved charging infrastructure, more affordable entry-level models, and the German government's subsidy incentives. In August, Germany saw a 75 percent increase in pure electric cars registered compared to the previous year, with 69,000 new electric vehicles registered in August alone.

Globally, electric cars accounted for 20.7 percent of new registrations in the first half of 2026, up from 15.6 percent a year earlier. The trend towards electric vehicles is strongest in Norway, where over 95 percent of new cars registered in 2025 were pure electric. Differences in charging network investments and government policies explain the wide range of electric car adoption rates between countries.

Germany leads the EU in electric car adoption, accounting for 28.9 percent of the EU's 1.89 million new electric vehicle registrations in 2025. France followed with 330,900 new electric cars, making up 17.5 percent of EU new registrations.
