President John Dramani Mahama has urged for enhanced domestic capacity, robust institutions, and sustainable financing to address the mounting debt burdens and international development challenges confronting nations in the Global South. Addressing a Presidential Roundtable organized by the Open Society Foundation in New York, as part of the 81st UN General Assembly proceedings, Mahama emphasized that for developing countries, the primary objective should be job creation, enhancement of public services, infrastructure development, and the expansion of opportunities, particularly for the younger generation.

Mahama clarified that when discussing sovereignty in this context, he refers to the nation's ability to act. He stressed the necessity for increased coordination among government entities, improved domestic resource collection, prudent financial management, and institutions capable of yielding tangible outcomes. Mahama concluded by affirming that once a strategy has proven efficacy, it should be incorporated into public systems, local delivery institutions, and long-term financing frameworks.

The roundtable convened presidents and chief executives of prominent global foundations to deliberate on sustainable development, financing, and institution strengthening across the Global South.
