MCMC ready to license e-commerce platforms once ministries set conditions, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR, September 22 — The Communications Ministry is awaiting guidance from the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Finance Ministry before permitting e-commerce platforms to operate. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching stated that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has the authority under current legislation to license these platforms, but definitive conditions must be determined by the respective ministries.

Discussions took place between the KPDN, MoF, and MCMC, with KPDN expressing intent to study regulatory measures for e-commerce platforms. Teo informed reporters after the Asean-China Cross Border E-Commerce Expo 2026 launch that MCMC is prepared to implement licensing as long as the necessary framework is established to foster a fair business ecosystem.

This statement addresses the apprehensions of local retailers concerning the impact of a prominent China-based e-commerce platform, which is renowned for offering products at exceptionally low costs. Teo emphasized that MCMC's readiness extends to all e-commerce platforms, aiming to ensure consumer protection and promote a level playing field.
