Matiang’i accepts Uhuru’s endorsement to lead Jubilee Party

Nairobi, Kenya - Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has formally endorsed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to assume leadership of the Jubilee Party in preparation for the 2027 General Election. Speaking at the party's handover, Uhuru indicated he would transition to a senior advisory role while remaining a member of the party.

He requested Jubilee members to accept Matiang’i as their presidential candidate, describing him as a young, wise, hardworking leader who "loves Kenyans" and has "no malice." Uhuru urged members to begin organizing early for the upcoming political season, emphasizing the need to identify candidates for various positions, including governors, senators, and MPs.

Despite stepping down from the top party position, Uhuru clarified that he remains a committed Jubilee member and intends to use his experience to guide the party. Matiang’i welcomed the endorsement, expressing his humility and commitment to ensuring the party's continued success in leading up to the 2027 election. The move coincides with a High Court ruling that prohibits retired presidents from holding formal leadership positions in political parties beyond six months of leaving office.

Uhuru's endorsement of Matiang’i has ignited internal competition within the party, with Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni vying for the position of party leader, advocating for a democratic selection process. Uhuru, however, urged members to focus on organizing the party and preparing for the 2027 election, discouraging political insults and instead encouraging Jubilee members to articulate their vision to Kenyans.
