Man remanded seven days over five-year-old niece's death in Kota Tinggi

KOTA TINGGI - A man has been detained for seven days in connection with the alleged drowning death of his five-year-old niece in Tanjung Sedili. The 37-year-old suspect, who was receiving treatment at Kota Tinggi Hospital, appeared in Sessions Court today. Judge Hafizah Abdul Rajak issued the remand order, which extends until September 28. The case is being handled under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which pertains to murder.

The suspect was apprehended following a report lodged by a concerned citizen at 9:30 am yesterday. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had thrown his niece, Nur Afiyah Qalesya Mustafa, into the river before engaging in a violent altercation with the girl's father. During the struggle, a policeman sustained injuries while attempting to subdue the suspect.

Yusof Othman, the district police chief, stated that the motive behind the incident is still under investigation. Reports suggest the suspect may have a history of mental health issues. The victim's body was transferred to Pasir Gudang Hospital for a post-mortem examination and is scheduled to be buried at the Kampung Sayang Muslim cemetery in Tanjung Sedili.
