King’s College: Unity Colleges staff defy FG resumption order

Staff of Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria refused to resume academic activities on Monday, citing their ongoing indefinite strike over the concession of King’s College, Lagos. The strike, organized by the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, continued despite the government's September 18 directive for schools to reopen following an agreement with the unions.

Unity College staff in Lagos and Ibadan were seen at the school gates, while parents largely stayed away. The government had agreed to suspend the management takeover of King’s College for two weeks at the request of the education ministers and labour union representatives, amid protests and industrial action over the concession.

The union rejected the agreement, accusing the Ministry of Education of breaching it by deploying police to the college and removing a staff member's child.
