Jo-Ann Strauss on South African heritage, family holidays and raising multicultural children

Former Miss South Africa and media figure Jo-Ann Strauss is highlighting the diverse heritage of South Africa through her own experiences and those of her family. While speaking about the launch of Club Med South Africa in Durban, Strauss spoke about her own childhood holidays that were more about quality family time rather than luxurious resorts.

She recalled a memorable stay in a rondavel in the Western Cape, which she described as feeling like a major upgrade. Strauss also spoke about her parents' efforts to make every holiday feel like a luxury experience, emphasizing that it's about spending good quality time together.

Strauss now strives to instill a strong sense of South African identity in her children, who are a mix of South African and German heritage. She believes that diversity is a significant privilege and wants her children to appreciate both local and international cultures. Strauss makes sure her kids experience a range of South African foods and traditions, including enjoying international dishes like sushi and fondue alongside more local favorites.

She believes luxury should enhance one's identity, not replace it, and that it's about elevating who you are.

For Strauss, Heritage Month is not just about celebrating South Africa on a calendar; it's about food, family memories, and the diverse cultural influences and traditions passed down through generations. She views travel as an opportunity to create memories and connect with people, rather than just staying in beautiful places.
