Iran’s Abbas Araghchi in New York for UN summit, first visit since West Asia war started

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to New York on Monday to attend the United Nations General Assembly, marking his first visit to the United States since the outbreak of the US-Iran war. The visit took place amidst heightened tensions in the West Asia region due to the increasing conflict surrounding Houthis' involvement. On Thursday, US authorities issued visas to the Iranian delegation, facilitating Araghchi's travel.

Araghchi, alongside Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, is scheduled to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Iranian foreign minister was spotted leaving his vehicle in New York, surrounded by a heightened security presence. The journey to the US was brief, with Araghchi making a quick stop in Qatar, as per reports from Iranian media.

Following his arrival in New York, Araghchi engaged in a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. During the call, they discussed the agenda for the UNGA and explored ways to promote international peace and security, according to Tasnim news agency.
