Iran, US hint at revival of talks as Trump, Pezeshkian due to attend UN

The United States and Iran are reportedly exploring the possibility of reviving negotiations to end their conflict as Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian are scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly in New York. This would be the first UN assembly attended by both leaders since Trump initiated "Operation Epic Fury" against Iran in February.

While Trump has expressed openness to meeting with Pezeshkian, a senior Iranian official stated that there are no plans for direct meetings between the two leaders, but Iran's delegation holds full authority to revive talks. Iran could potentially reopen the Strait of Hormuz to Gulf shipping within seven days if the US addresses Iran's demands for easing military pressure and lifting an American blockade on Iranian ports.

The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, indicated that the US is open to discussing with Iran, particularly if it leads to positive outcomes and achieving the ultimate goal of the situation. However, Rubio also noted that Pezeshkian is subordinate to Iran's supreme leader, a radical Shia cleric, and mentioned that Iran is run by "radical Shia clerics" who cannot have nuclear weapons.

Despite the hardline positions, Rubio emphasized that there is no harm in engaging and talking to someone.
