Iran ready to reopen Strait of Hormuz if US eases military pressure and lifts blockade

Iran is prepared to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz within a week if the United States reduces its military pressure and lifts the blockade on Iranian ports, according to a senior Iranian official speaking to Reuters. On Sunday, Iran's military central command informed the country that the United States was planning to resume military operations with backing from regional nations, warning that such actions would prompt Tehran's retaliatory measures without any limits or considerations.

The United States must publicly express its desire to resolve the situation diplomatically, confirm this through an official statement, and then agree on a timeline for the process to proceed, stated the senior Iranian official. Furthermore, the Iranian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, currently in New York, possesses full authority to resume diplomatic talks with the United States.

President Masoud Pezeshkian, who arrived in New York on Tuesday morning, will not meet with US President Donald Trump at UN headquarters, the official revealed.

The Iranian official added that formal discussions on an agreement to end hostilities with Washington can be held in New York through mediators. Tehran submitted its proposal to the US via mediators on September 16. The UN General Assembly presents a significant opportunity for the United States to return to diplomatic channels, according to the official, stressing that Iran would welcome a revival of diplomacy if Washington takes concrete steps.
