Infantino says he is open to talks over FIFA reform

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has suggested an independent review of the soccer organization's governance structure to address the backlash following his controversial decision to consider selling a 20% stake in FIFA’s commercial rights. In a letter to the FIFA Council and all 211 member association presidents, Infantino proposed the review to assess decision-making processes and recommend potential improvements.

He also indicated that he would seek consultations with confederations, member associations, and other stakeholders to strengthen FIFA’s decision-making.

The proposal to sell a minority stake in a FIFA-controlled commercial company was abandoned in July after facing significant opposition, including boycott threats from UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, and CONCACAF. These organizations subsequently called for changes to FIFA’s leadership. Infantino noted that the abandoned plan would not have affected sporting decisions and that the proposal remained a proposal, subject to necessary approvals from the Council and Member Associations.

Infantino emphasized that his role is not to pre-judge discussions on who should decide major strategic questions, stating that those in favor of a particular model should have the opportunity to present their case clearly. He also assured member associations that their treatment by FIFA would not depend on their positions on proposals or institutional matters, and that FIFA’s development and solidarity programs would continue under existing rules.

Despite the setback, Infantino remains committed to leading FIFA and confident in the organization's potential for improvement.
