Govt tactics pushing people towards revolt: Fazl

Islamabad is grappling with mounting debt pressure and inflation, prompting the government to implement measures to contain protests in the capital city. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman expressed concern over the government's tactics during a news conference, warning that they may fan the flames of dissent. At the meeting, Rahman advocated for parliament to be consulted on significant policy decisions, particularly those related to national and foreign affairs.

He also proposed an in-camera session of parliament to discuss the regional security situation. Rahman accused the government of stockpiling containers in Islamabad to preempt anticipated demonstrations, arguing that such tactics only serve to radicalize citizens. The JUI-F leader emphasized that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has the right to protest and that the party had demonstrated peaceful protest methods in the past.

However, he declined to mediate on behalf of the government, asserting that his party was the opposition and thus could not serve as a go-between. Rahman criticized the hybrid government, asserting that it represented the military establishment and that genuine political authority was necessary for political dialogue. He condemned the arrest of PTI founder's sisters, advocating for the constitutional right of political workers and parties to hold protest rallies.

The JUI-F chief also raised concerns about the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, questioning the circumstances surrounding the alleged shooting of a provincial minister. In response to reports of potential constitutional amendments, Rahman expressed openness to discussing provincial autonomy, but stressed that the issue should be framed within the context of the constitutional landscape 25 years ago.

He recalled the JUI-F's pivotal role in mending Pakistan-India relations in 2003 and suggested that past contributions should inform current political and diplomatic choices. Rahman accused China of losing confidence in the country, noting that state institutions are on a defensive stance amidst internal challenges. He urged for the country's predicament to be brought to the attention of parliament.
