Ghana to host 6th FAJ Continental Congress

Ghana has been chosen to host the 6th Continental Congress of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) following approval by the FAJ Steering Committee. The decision was made on September 17-18, 2026, during a two-day meeting in Accra. The congress will gather journalists' unions and associations from across Africa to discuss the federation's agenda, elect new leadership, and collaborate with solidarity organizations.

Journalists across the continent currently face challenges such as attacks on media freedom, violations of labor rights, and economic pressures on journalists and media organizations. Ghana's successful bid follows its previous hosting of the FAJ Steering Committee meeting, organized by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) with support from KGL Group.

During their visit to Accra, FAJ leaders met President John Dramani Mahama to discuss media freedom, journalist safety, information integrity, and the role of independent journalism in Africa's democratic and development agenda. FAJ President Omar Faruk Osman emphasized the need for stronger professional journalism, wider media and information literacy, and sustained efforts to protect information integrity.

GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour highlighted the welfare and working conditions of journalists, advocating for practical measures to improve their safety and professional security. The FAJ Steering Committee also approved the federation's financial and independent audit reports, admitted four new journalists' organizations, and adopted a new communication strategy to increase the voice and visibility of the Pan-African journalists' movement.
