General : Penang Seeks Budget 2027 Funding To Boost High-value Tourism - Exco

George Town, Penang is pushing for the federal government to allocate funds in the 2027 Budget to bolster the state's high-value tourism sector. Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai outlined key priorities, including expanding air connectivity, securing more international events, and preserving the city's heritage.

Wong emphasized the importance of an international air connectivity fund, including matching grants, to attract direct flights from key markets like Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the Middle East. The Penang International Airport project, set to double its capacity to 12 million passengers a year, necessitates the establishment of new routes and increased flight frequencies.

Penang is also seeking a larger federal matching fund to bid for and accommodate high-profile international conferences, exhibitions, sporting events, festivals, concerts, and large-scale arts and cultural events. Wong stressed that business events generated an economic impact of RM1.91 billion last year, highlighting Penang's potential as a major regional hub for business events.

The proposed UNESCO George Town Conservation and Regeneration Fund aims to ensure the heritage city's continued prosperity by funding the preservation of heritage buildings, public spaces, safety, accessibility, and traditional businesses. Wong stressed that Penang's focus should shift from merely increasing tourist numbers to promoting high-value tourism after Visit Malaysia 2026.

He also advocated for the continuation of the 100% tourism tax allocation to the states for the following year. The 2027 Budget is expected to be presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on October 9.
